Any Better? (Open) « Thread Started on Jun 16, 2008, 6:24am »
{I'm bored. Very bored. So I post xD)
Zadari pursed her lips as she tossed a stone into the waters of the lakes, not really knowing why she did it. The stone landed, and ripples flowed out from the area where the stone had been submerged. Wasn't it fascinating? That one little action could affect a much wider area? The ripples grew bigger and bigger, then faded. The weyrling had turned his head the wrong way, and then it was like domino's. One bad thing after the other, but Zadari's ripples hadn't faded.
Talking to Liamar had helped. A little. It was hard right after wards, having taken down the walls she'd built.. It was much harder to pull them back up again. Now, watching the ripples in the lake, she wondered how she'd ever beaten the memories back. It seemed like only yesterday she'd sat beside a lake just like this one, her weyrmate's arms around her waist as she leant back against him. Feeling his breath on her cheek as she watched Sitath play with Trith. Then, she couldn't imagine a more loving, fun sight. Now, that was different.
Glancing at the spot where the rock had sunk, Zadari sighed as she saw only a clear lake surface, calm. Like no dragon had ever dumped his or her rider in it, like no one had ever thrown rocks at it. Like a looking glass. Sighing as she sat by the lake's edge and kicked her boots off to paddle her feet in the water, something she hadn't done in what seemed like forever. Since before Sitath be- left. Just letting the water cool her feet, it was a nice feeling. Like the time Sitath had snapped playfully at her toes when he was still a playful hatchling, laughing hysterically had felt good too.
Had talking about Sitath and his death made it any better? Zadari wasn't entirely sure, now, she couldn't escape his memory. She couldn't, before she'd locked herself away, now she saw traces of her beloved blue everywhere. A splash, a laugh, a flash of blue hide. It made her ache even more for him, made her even more lonely. Yet... It was a good thing that he wasn't hidden away in her memories any more. Really good, she'd deny it if asked... But she'd missed the memories almost as much - if a little less - as she missed the dragon.

((Lol -- can't seem to get away from meh, heh? <33 xD))
She had long-since become accustomed to having her hands full. It had been about a turn since the birthing, and ever since, Mal's hands were very rarely free. Not that she minded, not in the least... after all, the green rider felt empty without Lera and Ree in her arms. It was abnormal. And she would not leave her children. However, there had been a Gather a few sevendays ago, and Mal had bought a good bit of wherryhide. She had just recently finished fashioning it to constuct a babe-carrier, which she now used. Lera was in the carrier, now, on her shoulder, while Ree was in her arms. The little boy cried almost constantly when he wasn't with Mal, so he didn't like the carrier very much.
Cuddling Ree, the greenrider made her way to the lake, stopping at one of the banks and sitting down carefully. She settled her baby boy in her lap before taking Lera out of the make-shift carrier and cradling her in an arm. Mal had eyes for no one but her twins as she settled them, Ree sniffling in irritation as she shifted a bit to accomodate both of them. As the woman quieted him, she heard a splash and a sigh. Well, that certainly wasn't her... but Mal had thought she and her babes were alone.
Apparently not.
Ree clung to her finally, but he quieted as his mother cuddled him, even when her full attention was no longer on him. Lera looked with her mother around the lake, until they both spotted Zadari. Now, while she couldn't pride herself on knowing everyone by the small Weyr, this greenrider did know a lot of the inhabitants. Forgetting the carrier and putting them both in her arms, Mal stood shakily and made her way over to this stranger, a smile hiding her confusion at the other woman's troubled look.
"Hello, I'm Mal of green Meriath. These two are Lera and Ree." The rider's smile grew wider, as any mother's would as she talked of her children. "May I ask who you are?"

((XD I can't escape -flees- <333))
Zadari had honestly hoped she was alone, it was alot easier to wallow in self pity when there was someone around. It was alot easier to think at all when she was alone, apparently, what Zadari wanted wasn't even considered as she caught sight of the other woman. Ugh. People. More than one, even if two of three of those people couldn't do more than babble at her.
She could hope though, that the woman would keep walking past. Perhaps there was someone she knew around the lake, and was just-- Talking to her. Zadari glanced at the other woman out of the corner of her eye, expression clouding at the expression. Shards. Did she just hang out a sign or something? All riders bother me! Or something along those lines? "Hello." Zadari murmured, glancing at the the children quickly and then back at the green rider's face. It was hard not to smile back, but some how, Zadari kept a firm reign on it and merely nodded.
"Zadari." It was on the tip of her tongue to add her dragon's name, so much so that she opened her mouth to say it as she had. Only to clase it with an audible snap of her teeth. Ugh. That she could say it so naturally, not have to pull herself up every time she said her name. "Your children are lovely." She finally muttered, though looked away to glare at the water again.

Lera seemed to be fascinated with the woman, much to Mal’s confusion. The little one babbled a little, reaching out for the person who added her name – ‘Zadari’. Oh, well, that name explained a lot. Even with two little ones tagging along, the greenrider had head partials of this other woman’s story. She had lost her dragon, a blue, and had somehow managed to survive and move on with her life.
“Thank you,” she replied, a smile again hiding her confusion. Mine, do you want me to send my little cousin? Meriath inquired, a question that Mal quickly turned down. No, dearest, no. I’ll be fine. Thank you, though.
Still, though, Lera struggled to at least touch Zadari, and it occupied her mother for a moment. This woman surely wouldn’t appreciate it, but she had to ask. Her little girl would be in the grass in moments, if not, or she’d have to get Mer to send Sapphiren. He always calmed the babe down when Mal was unable to, but she felt that that wouldn’t be the best course of action, at the moment.
“I hate to ask, Zadari, but might you hold my little Lera for a few moments? She seems bound and determined to get to know you, and I’m afraid that I might drop her if she continues to get to you. I’ve got my hands full, as it is.” A wry smile was added to this, as Mal tried to subdue the little girl at least until Zadari’s response. If it was a decline, then she would simply ask for Sapphiren. Oh, well.
((Sorry, it was the failure to imagine Zadari holding a little babe that made me do this. xP I simply couldn’t see her reaction.))

Zadari was slightly distracted by the way the child was babbling at her, and reaching for her. Sending her mother a confused glance as she looked from the child to the lake once more. Shrugging as the green rider spoke, Zadari would have been completely content if Mal had walked away then.
Inwardly though, she felt like curling up into a little ball like a weyrbrat who had been refused sweets. Why couldn't the riders just avoid her? Even if they didn't know her by sight, surely their dragons would sense it if someone had such and aversion to being around them. Stupid, sharding ... Something. Chewing on her lip absently, Zadari tried very hard to ignore the way the baby was straining out towards her, completely certain Mal wouldn't want her any where near her child.
"Pardon?" Shock coloured her tone as she looked up sharply, from the child again, to her mother. Hold her? Actually hold her? Zadari had never been around any child younger than seven turns, or not that she could remember. Children tended to have an odd aversion to her, especially lately. "Erm, sure. I guess so. I really don't know how though." Zadari was almost completely certain that she'd probably end up dropping the child, but that was only if the child didn't stop wriggling. Hopefully she wouldn't, she didn't need a rider hating her for dropping her kid.

((Exactly. XDDDD))
A smile broke out over Mal’s face as Zadari gave her affirmation, hesitant though it was. “Oh, thank you! Here…” Ree was carefully shifted up in the crook of her arm, and she extended her other arm, the arm holding Lera, out to Zadari. “Just cradle her in your arms, and support her head in the crook of your arm. It’s really quite simple, once you get the hang of it.”
Now that she had two hands, Mal shifted so that Ree’s head was looking over her shoulder, and she bounced him gently as he clung to her. This was better, and it seemed that everyone liked this arrangement. Even if Mal didn’t like Lera being out of her hands, the twins seemed to enjoy it a lot.
Speaking of Lera.
The little girl had simply cooed once she was extended towards Zadari, and her frantic attempts to get to the woman calmed somewhat. Now Lera only had one tiny hand, reaching out and up to grasp the other woman’s clothes. It simply became more and more apparent that she was amazed with Zadari as the little one gurgled softly, still reaching out.
“Thanks again, Zadari. It seems that she really does like you…” Mal continued to bounce lightly, her eyes on her baby girl and baby boy, shifting her gaze at alternatives. “If it inconveniences you, of course, we’ll just be on our way. I can always call my f’lizard – he’s really good with both of them. I just…” She just what? No idea.

Zadari took the child hesitantly, holding the little gilr as though she was made of glass and the slightest twitch of movement would hurt the poor thing. In anything else, Zadari wouldn't be hesitent, confidence was something she carried with her in everything. Holding the little girl though, Zadari was deathly afraid to move. Shifting her arm to support the child's head, Zadari merely stared down at her.
"Never had to hold a baby before.." Odd little thing wasn't she? Zadari slowly rose a brow as she grasped a hand in her clothing. She was trying very hard to not show how very enchanted she was with the soft gurgles and seeming curiousity. She might not understand her reasoning for wanting to be near Zadari, but it was obvious she thought Zadari some what strange and/or interesting. Maybe it was just the colour of her hair, most Pernese had dark hair, you didn't see many with red hair.
"She's sweet, did you say her name was Lera? Pretty name." Zadari's eyes only flickered to mal, focusing instead on the bundle of movement that was Lera. She could see why she would find Lera interesting, she was a baby, and no matter how much Zadari tried to deny it at times, she was indeed female and did like children. Some times. Vice versa though, all Zadari saw in her reflection was half herself, the half that was endlessly searching for the rest, empty and hollow. What could Lera find interesting about Zadari?
"No, I don't mind. What could possibly fill my time these days?" Though the words were bitter, Zadari smiled ever so slightly at Lera. Out wardly, she didn't respond to the mentioning of a flitter, aside from the slight clenching of her jaw, inwardly, she half panicked. She hadn't been around flitters much, they were too alike dragons, and much as they were sweet, she didn't want to face one just yet. And she'd said he, that left three colours, one of which Zadari avoided like nothing else. "I really don't mind, but I won't hold it against you if you want to leave. I'm not much company lately."

Who knew why Lera was so fascinated with the redheaded girl? Probably only the babe, herself, Mal thought happily. Watching her baby girl clutch at Zadari, the happy thoughts were gone with a wince. She couldn’t call the twins ‘babes’ anymore. The other day, Ree had just taken his first steps alone towards his mother, and Lera has working on it every chance she got. They were both beginning to try and hold their bottles by themselves, and Lera was ahead of her twin in sthingy-feeding herself. They weren’t babes any longer – or, at least, they wouldn’t be for much longer.
Thankfully, they were both smaller than was really ‘usual’, allowing Mal to cradle them both in her arms. She wouldn’t be able to for much longer, but… she would take the opportunities as they came to her. Ree suddenly looked up, clinging to her even more, and murmured, “Mamama,” before burying his head in her shoulder. It drew the smile back to Mal’s face. Neither of them spoke often, but when they did, it was so sweet!
“I hadn’t held one, either, before I had the twins. I had to get used to it very quickly,” Mal replied with a small smile. And she wouldn’t be able to hold them for much longer, at least not together. Soon they would be walking all over, holding her hands. Oh, well… she could deal with it.
Before Lera’s mother had the chance to reply to Zadari’s next comment, the little girl stepped up. With Zadari’s clothing still tightly held in one of her hands, she spoke, too. “Lewa,” she confirmed happily, giggling as soon as she said it before cooing again and continuing to examine the woman that held her. It had been only a week or two ago when Lera first said her own name, although Ree hadn’t yet even made the attempt. However, now was not the time for Mal to be contemplating her children’s progression – she had to focus on Zadari.
As Zadari showed no objection of continuing to hold Lera, Mal immediately shook her head. “No, no. If you don’t mind, I don’t think I’d have the heart of tearing my little girl from you. As I said earlier, she seems quite captivated with you.” Smiling happily, she added, “And anyways, you’re not bad company. When you spend your days with two twins, however adorable, a flitter, and a dragon, any human company above the age of 10 is quite welcome.”

Zadari was actually beginning to enjoy holding the little girl - much to her disgust - and thus relaxed a little more with her in her arms. Babies were alright, not too bad. Drooly and kinda weird, but other wise okay. She didn't stink yet, so that was a plus in the little girl's records for Zadari, not that a stench would have bothered her all that much anyway, not outwardly. It was when grown people started to smell like the babes did that she got a bit uncomfortable.
Glancing up as the boy murmured a word, something about his mother she assumed. Zadari actually chuckled at his shy actions. So cute really. Would he retain that shyness as he grew older? Or would that dissapear at the same time as the unsteady feet and babbling words? "I don't plan on children." Zadari shrugged slightly, she had never thought about it really. Always assumed there would be plenty of time before she had to think about it. She was only twenty one turns old, not that it mattered now. Besides one usually needed a weyrmate for children.
As Lera said her name, Zadari practically melted inside. Her smile softened as the look in her eyes did, nodding slightly. "That's you isn't it, sweet heart. Not going to let anyone talk about you right?" Chuckling softly, Zadari glanced up as Mal spoke again, blushing slightly as she straightened out her smile. It wouldn't do to have someone seeing her all soft and... well, soft.
"Can't imagine why." Zadari muttered, a smile twitching her lips as she glanced down at Lera. Children really were rather endearing weren't they? Glancing up at Mal again, Zadari's expression cooled slightly and she merely shrugged, at least Mal had those to spend her time with. "As I said. I'm not much company. A ten turn old would be more cheering than I am."

Call her crazy, but Mal had the feeling that Zadari had relaxed with Lera in her arms, and was actually enjoying her time with the babe. The smile that had creeped up on her face stayed for a moment, at this thought, and when it vanished, the corners of her mouth still slightly curved. She adjusted Ree’s body with a bounce, allowing her hands to support him more comfortably as the boy clung to her. He laid his head gently on his mother’s shoulder, and if you turned him around, you’d see a broad smile on his face.
Mal was quite surprised at Zadari’s next words, but the only noticeable sign was the slight widening of her eyes. “Really?” she questioned. Looking back, however, she realized that neither had she. “Well, I must admit, children wasn’t really on my mind. I didn’t even have a weyrmate that got me pregnant – shards, I don’t even know who the father of my twins is.” She winced at this point. After all, she didn’t want this girl to think her a sleeper, even though it was most likely going around the Weyr. “There was a lot of greens at my old Weyr, you see, and… well… they were all proddy one month, to the point where Meriath Flew three times, simply so that no one would steal her few special males. And she got Caught by a different dragon each time. I will probably never know who sired my children.”
She was only twenty-five. And shardit, she didn’t regret a thing. “I wasn’t exactly planning on children in the near future, but I can almost guarantee you that if you ever have them, you won’t remember the reasons why you never wanted them. I can only offer you one piece of advice, though, if you ever do want children.” Mal wore a wry smile as she continued. “Know who the father is.” Life would have been much easier for her if she had.
The greenrider’s jaw almost dropped, not because Lera said her name, but because of Zadari’s response. Lera, however, was not fazed in the least. Smiling broadly up at the woman who was holding her, the little girl reached for Zadari’s red hair. “Nowp!” she replied cheerfully. She might not be able to verbalize her words quite correctly, but she could certainly understand most everything around her!
“Not much company for who?” Mal asked, her eyebrows quirking cheerfully at Zadari. “I think that any child, once they pass a certain age, can be extremely annoying. Unless, of course, you gave birth to them.” Getting a knotch quieter, she added – almost to herself – “I don’t think these two could ever get annoying. “I’d much rather a grown woman who isn’t yelling at the top of her lungs, or asking annoying questions. And if I needed any cheering, I wouldn’t go to a ten-turn old. I can assure you.”

No, she'd just said it to be funny. To make the green rider to look at her funny. Of course really. Though the thoughts were close to spoken, Zadari said nothing, keeping her eyes on Lera. She didn't particularly get along with adults at all, even with Sitath, she'd never been particularly good at making friends, just a good one when they finally managed to get there.
"Sitath only chased the one green." Zadari's voice broke as she spoke her dragon's name, clearing her throat before forcing herself to continue, wade on through the pain of saying anything. "And even then, it just didn't happen. Parenting and me are obviously two things that stay apart." Yes, that sounded alright, like she wasn't overly bothered. Yes, fine. Eaaasy. Opening her mouth to retort, Zadari quickly closed it again, the one man she'd even consider was gone. No, kids was not going to happen.
Chuckling at the child, Zadari didn't even bother to remove her hair from her fingers. Lera was certainly interesting, she knew what was going on, even if she didn't say much. She was speaking alot more than Zadari would have thought she would... "That's a good girl." Looking back up at the rider, Zadari shrugged her shoulders. For who indeed? "I dunno, I just know I'm not much company."

Sitath. That was her blue, that’s right. The greenrider could only nod, feeling slightly ashamed of herself, and even a bit of Meriath, for Flying so much and, therefore, getting her rider pregnant. Really? the green asked, hurt. No, no, nononono, my dear, I could never be ashamed of you. I’m sorry, lovely, I wouldn’t change a thing. You did nothing wrong, and I would never be ashamed of you.[/color] Reassured by the fierce, vigorous words, the green lay her head back down.
Now Mal felt ashamed for the thought of being ashamed of her lovely green. Visibly wincing, the rider buried her head in the small crook of Ree’s neck for a moment, before looking back up. Her eyes went to Lera before Zadari, and the look of joy that was on her baby’s face, as well as the way that the redhead acted around her, made Mal beg to differ. “I hate to disagree with you, but the way I see it, you’d be an amazing parent. You’re very good with children, as I can tell… but there, I’m sorry for butting into your life. Don’t listen to me.” She grinned at the dragonless girl, bouncing her boy to hike him up a little higher.
Lera cooed at the praise, still examining the hair grasped in her tiny hand. She gave it a tug or two, fairly hard, before releasing it again. She liked this person, liked them a lot, because she was nice and fun and… nice. Cooing again, she now took in her hand Zadari’s shirt, as it was right next to her own head. She tugged softly, before looking at in inquisitively, joy obvious in her features.
Her mother grinned again, glad that her girl was so happy, as well as Ree. It wasn’t very hard to make them both pleased, but it still made Mal smile, when they did. She barely registered Zadari’s shrug, acknowledging it only with a shrug of her own, followed by a small grin. The words, however, were responded to with words. “Well, now, I don’t believe that.”
