Too bad her internal schedule was so messed up. She missed all the set meals. And from what she could tell, this Weyr had good food!

At least, Alina reflected wryly, better than the holdless had ever gotten. Well, the sun was down, Alinsk was hunting, and the kitchen called! Or it would be calling if she had any idea how to get there. Too bad everyone sane was already asleep in bed. Hm. This corridor looked awfully familiar - had she already been here?

The young woman tossed her dark head impatiently. Yes she had been here. It was all storerooms, she'd even taken the time to check a few minutes ago when she'd first come down this way. Augh!

Alinsk, a little help? she pleaded through her link to the big gold wher. A moment of probing around before Alinsk sent a general direction of left. "That's it?" she demanded aloud. "No map? Just left? Oh thank you so much." Alinsk gave her the wher equivalent of a mental shrug. She was too distracted by the delicious wherry buck she'd caught to be much more help than that. "Well, fine then." Alina headed down the first leftward corridor.

Shiane was very rarely away from Aaria, the constant hovering of ehr older sister had gotten comewhat frustrating in the past few days however, and Shiane had chosen this moment to slip away. How else could she learn the lay out of the weyr? She couldn't always have Ria guiding her footsteps with her voice. Especially if she Impressed, it wasn't a pleasant thought, much asit would have been for any other. Shiane had always been close to her sister, closer than many siblings could ever claim, she'd never once argued with Ria, and the idea that something could come between herself and her sister was an uncomfortable one. So was the idea that a dragon could love, and understand, her sister more than she herself could.

It was all so confusing, and even though Ria was a wonderful person to talk to when you were confused, Shiane often needed time to just... Think. A quite uncomfortable thing really, thinking usually meant silence, and what was spookier than silence to a blind person? She could hear very faint footsteps, but down here, in the lower caverns, everything had a tendency to echo, just slightly. Making it harder to tell distance, or harder than it would have been normally.

Wait, was that a voice? Shaine turned her head from here it had been tilting towards the wall, listening carefully as the voice sounded again. Yes, it was, and a female too. Not one she knew, but a female. Voices were the first thing Shiane had learnt to identify, they were the easiest after all, every person had a different voice, even if only slightly... This voice had a tone of anger... No, frustration more than anger, what on Pern could this woman be frustrated about? Frowning as she took her hand off the wall, Shiane turned towards the voice, she wasn't certain of the distance, but foot steps were approaching... Foot steps were harder to set apart, she'd know the sound of Ria's steps anywhere, but this woman was new...
"D-do you need some help?" Yeah, Shiane would be a whole heap of help. Maybe a little...

Alina turned her head sharply toward the other voice. "D-do you need some help?" The dim glows in the passage didn't affect her keen eyes as she made a quick study of her newfound companion. She was delicate, a young girl. Or at least, young-seeming. Alina herself was in a position to know that appearances could be deceiving, after all.

"If you happen to give better directions than 'left' I would gladly take them," the wherhandler answered dryly. "Otherwise you get yourself off to bed, kitten, because I haven't the time for babysitting." Well, no one had ever accused Alina of tact, that was for sure.

Naturally, her words made Shiane bristle, she wasn't that small, she might look a few turns younger than the seventeen she could claim but 'kitten' was going a bit far. Not that Shiane would say anything along those lines, but the brief flash of annoyance crossed her features before being earased as she shrugged.
"Depends where you want to go. I know my way aroudn the parts of the weyr I need to. Barracks, kitchens, and I was learning the corridors when I heard you." Voice soft and almost breathy, Shiane's annoyance at the woman helped her speak more confidently.

"And I hardly know the difference, most people just tell me 'left', I apparently don't need much direction." She really didn't, the sounds of voices and footsteps guided her more than directions ever would. Still, depending on where this woman wanted to go would tell her whether she could help.
"And I'm not a child, I don't need to go to bed. It's better for me to learn my way at night, too much noise distracts me."

"I was on my way to the kitchen, but this obviously isn't it," Alina replied, her tone almost bored. "Alinsk apparently doesn't see the need to interrupt her meal to give more precise directions."

Alina tapped her forefinger against her lip, catching a vague wisp of thought from Alinsk. The wher was still in the midst of consuming her "breakfast" but, being the nosy gold that she was, she'd been following her handler's conversation. Now she broke in with a question, asking if the girl was always in a cave even out in the sun. What in Fall are you talking about? Almost exasperated with her handler's denseness, Alinsk sent a succinct reply that roughly translated to 'blind?'

And so it was that Alina, through prompting by her busybody wher, asked quite bluntly "Are you blind, girl?"

Kitchen, yes Shiane knew where that was. It was one of the first places she'd learnt, to be able to find the kitchens, Aaria could find her in the kitchens, and once she was in the kitchens, she knew her way back to the barracks.
"I know where that is.." A long pause, before the girl's eyes lit up, "You're bonded to a wher? What's she like, I've never met a wher handler before, I've heard they're such wonderful bondeds, the whers I mean."

Her next question had the smile slipping off Shiane's face, her expression one of slight annoyance mixed in with cautiousness. How did she know? The woman wasn't close enough to see her eyes, so how would she know whether Shiane was blind or not. Oh, yeah, she was a wher handler. No doubt her wher would have something to do with teh blunt question that made her cheeks flame.
"Yes, I am." Voice had lowered to but a mere whispered, fingers tapping lightly on the wall for something to do.
"My name isn't girl, it's Shiane by the way."

"Mm." Alina made a noncommittal sound in the back of her throat at the girl's reply. It wasn't like she really cared that she was blind; there had been plenty of blind people among the holdless, so it wasn't all that unusual to her. Most learned to get along with little help, she imagined it was the same for this youngling. She conveniantly ignored Shiane's protest about her name.

"I suppose whers make good bondeds. I don't really have something to compare her to, though. I've never had a firelizard, and I'm obviously not a dragonrider, so Alinsk's all I've known." She touched Alinsk's mind - ah, she'd caught another wherry. Breakfast was still on.

"She can be a pain," Alina grinned at Alinsk's mock outrage, "but she's good company."

The non commital sound made shiane nervous, it was one of those times she wished she could see the emotions on people's faces, understand what storm was brewing beneath the calm. The woman didn't make another comment on her blindness though, and Shiane was inwardly relieved. She might be accoustemed to it, but it didn't mean that she had to like being so different. That she had to work out her way by smell and touch.

"I don't have anything to go on either. My sister is a candidate though, maybe she'll explain it if she Impresses." Shiane's voice was hesitant, as though she were unsure about the other's reaction to her words. Shards, she'd proven rather unpredicatable already, shooting questions Shiane wouldn't have expected from anyone at her.
"Ria wants me to try at the next wher clutch but... I just don't know. I tend to be a bit clumsy in new places... Anyways, I'm sorry, you wanted to go to the kitchens."

"Mm." Another random noise from Alina, this on the subject of the next wher clutch. Considering that the only gold wher in the Weyr (hehe) was Alinsk, this girl had better make with the impressing of Alina pretty fast. Not just any dimglow was getting one of her precious soul-mate's eggs, oh no.

Oh, but what the heck. The small woman reached out to pat the girl awkwardly on the shoulder. "You being blind won't affect you Impressing a wher, kitten. I can walk through a forest in pitch black without running into a tree or tripping over a root with Alinsk to guide me, and I for one am not used to not using my eyes." She gave an uncomfortable shrug; being nice was not her usual mode of operation.

"Right then." She cleared her throat, once more snappishly brisk. "Let's stop with the yipping and get to the kitchen. I'm hungry enough to eat a dragon. Well? Move it, girl, don't just stand around moping like some dimglow."

(OOC: Sorry I took ages on this. Been gone and stuff.)
